HOLa

As a stateside-born Puerto Rican, born somewhere between Tennessee and Kentucky, my identity is deeply woven into my craft. Using techniques like slab building and creating “clay patches,” I explore the concept of ‘patchwork’ as a metaphor for the diverse parts of one’s identity. While the seams and stitches is the journey towards the feeling of wholeness. In this way the act of creating pottery becomes a reflection of my own experience, allowing me to bridge the gap between my Puerto Rican heritage and stateside upbringing. Through my pots, I seek to unravel my own complexities of identity while bringing simple pleasures to everyday life.

I live in Asheville, NC and make pots in a wonderful community studio in the River Arts District.  I mainly use red clay and colored slip, which I then fire to Cone 6 . I handbuild each piece, giving them a cozy feeling like an old house or a loved, timeworn quilt.
